The Imole Campaign Council (TICC) has the accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of using its powers for political purposes after the agency reportedly froze Osun State Government accounts ahead of the state’s governorship election.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of its Media and Publicity Committee, Bamidele Salam, the council described the action as an abuse of authority and alleged that it was aimed at influencing the outcome of the election.
According to the council, the freezing of the state’s accounts just days before the governorship poll would hinder the government’s ability to carry out essential responsibilities, including the payment of salaries, pensions, infrastructure projects, security operations and other public services.
The campaign council argued that the timing of the action suggested political motives rather than a genuine anti-corruption effort. It maintained that the EFCC’s intervention could disrupt governance and negatively affect residents who rely on government services.
TICC further alleged that the commission had exceeded its statutory mandate by taking actions it said could interfere with the democratic process, warning against what it described as the use of public institutions to influence political outcomes.
While reiterating its support for accountability and transparency in governance, the council said it opposed what it called “political witch-hunting disguised as the fight against corruption.”
The council urged the EFCC to immediately lift the restriction on the state’s accounts, arguing that governance should not be disrupted during the election period and that Osun residents should be allowed to exercise their democratic rights without external pressure.
