Lagos State House of Assembly has congratulated the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Oba Rilwan Babatunde Osuolale Akiolu, CFR, on the occasion of his 23rd coronation anniversary.
The lawmakers extended the congratulatory message during plenary on Monday, commending the monarch for his dedicated service, leadership and contributions to the peace, unity and development of Lagos State.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, acknowledged Oba Akiolu’s longstanding commitment to the people of Lagos, noting that his service to the state predates his ascension to the throne.
Obasa recalled the monarch’s distinguished career in the Nigeria Police Force, where he rose to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) before retiring from active service.
The Speaker also appreciated Oba Akiolu for his continued support for the Lagos State House of Assembly and his contributions to maintaining peace, stability and development across the state.
He described the monarch as a man of honour who continues to play a significant role in the affairs of Lagos.
The Majority Leader, Hon. Noheem Adams, also congratulated the Oba and prayed for his continued good health, wisdom and longevity.
Similarly, Hon. Kehinde Joseph highlighted the monarch’s contributions during the period when the Federal Government under former President Olusegun Obasanjo withheld statutory allocations due to Lagos State.
Joseph recalled that Oba Akiolu stood firmly with the state government during the period and contributed to efforts that eventually led to the resolution of the dispute, in collaboration with the then Lagos State Governor and now President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Other lawmakers who spoke during the plenary described Oba Akiolu as a forthright and straightforward traditional ruler who had served the people of Lagos diligently.
Following the tributes, Speaker Obasa directed the Clerk of the House, Mrs. Adenike Oshinowo, to convey the Assembly’s congratulatory message to the Oba of Lagos in a formal letter.
