Senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District, Saliu Mustapha, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State.
Mustapha announced his resignation in a statement on Thursday, saying the decision followed weeks of consultations with political stakeholders, supporters, constituents and other well-meaning residents of the state.
The senator said he did not take the decision lightly, but concluded that the direction of the APC in the state no longer sufficiently aligned with his political convictions and the aspirations of the people he represents.
“As a politician, I have always believed that politics must be about people, principles and purpose,” Mustapha said.
He added that where a political platform no longer aligned with those values, “the honourable thing to do is to chart a new course.”
Mustapha expressed appreciation to the leadership of the APC, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the relationships and experiences he had gained during his time in the party.
He, however, assured his constituents, supporters and political associates that his resignation from the APC would not affect his commitment to serving the people of Kwara Central, Kwara State and Nigeria.
“While my political platform may change, my principles, my purpose and my commitment to the people remain unchanged,” he said.
Mustapha, who is also known as Turaki of Ilorin Emirate, said he remained committed to public service and would continue to work for the interests of his constituents.
