Lagos State University (LASU) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, has ended her five-year tenure, highlighting extensive infrastructure development and improved academic accreditation as some of the major achievements recorded under her administration.

Olatunji-Bello disclosed this while speaking at the grand finale of LASU’s 29th and 30th Combined Convocation Ceremonies.

She said her administration oversaw the construction of more than 50 infrastructure projects across the university, including 8,000-bed student hostels and a N3 billion TETFund-sponsored Academic Resource Centre.

The outgoing vice-chancellor also disclosed that LASU’s internally generated revenue increased from N3 billion in September 2021 to N13 billion by September 2025.

According to her, the university recorded a 96 per cent success rate in the accreditation of first-year programmes. She added that LASU subsequently secured full accreditation for 43 of the 44 programmes presented in 2023, while 17 new programmes received full accreditation in 2026.

Olatunji-Bello said her administration established four faculties and two schools, while introducing more than 30 new academic programmes.

On research and innovation, she disclosed that LASU researchers secured N29 million in research grants, while the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) approved N3 billion for the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Cyber Security.

She also highlighted the university’s sporting achievements, noting that LASU finished second overall at the 2024 All-Africa University Games and won 39 medals at the 2025 Nigeria Universities Games.

The convocation ceremonies will see a total of 20,604 students graduate across the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.

As part of the ceremonies, LASU conferred honorary doctorate degrees on Aliko Dangote, Akin Kekere-Ekun and Harriet-Ann Omobola Bola Adesola in recognition of their contributions to business, finance, entrepreneurship and governance.

Reflecting on her tenure, Olatunji-Bello described the period as one of transformation, saying it positioned LASU as “the most subscribed university in Nigeria and the most digitally advanced among our peers.”

She expressed appreciation to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for his support, while describing the five uninterrupted convocation ceremonies conducted during her tenure as one of her proudest achievements.
