Residents of Eti-Osa Constituency II in Lagos State have received a two-year free health insurance coverage under the Ilera Eko Standard Jaara Health Insurance Scheme, sponsored by the lawmaker representing the constituency, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu.
The programme, which is expected to cover 5,000 residents, was launched today August 26th, 2026 at the Y-Arena Multipurpose Centre, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, with a large turnout of beneficiaries and residents of the constituency.
Speaking on the initiative, Yishawu said he introduced the programme to educate residents on the benefits of health insurance, particularly as many could not afford the rising cost of healthcare.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at sensitising residents to the benefits of health insurance and providing them with access to healthcare without the burden of paying huge medical bills.
“Many people cannot afford healthcare and have to look for someone to bear the cost. With this healthcare insurance, what they are supposed to pay huge amounts of money for will be drastically reduced, and in some cases, they may not have to pay at all.
“I feel this is one of the things people need, and we have made provision for it,” he said.
Yishawu added that the health insurance initiative was part of several programmes being implemented for residents of the constituency, including education, skill acquisition for young and old people, and ICT training to mention few.
Explaining the scheme to the beneficiaries, a representative of the Lagos State Health Management Agency, Mr. Ramon said successful registrants would receive a policy number, which they could use to access healthcare at their selected healthcare provider.
He said the scheme covers general consultations, specialist consultations, medical tests, dental and eye care, minor surgeries and other healthcare services. He added that pregnant women could also benefit from services including antenatal care, drugs, scans and delivery, while newborn babies are entitled to healthcare coverage for 28 days.
The representative said the coverage would enable beneficiaries to access healthcare without paying directly for services covered under the scheme, subject to the terms of the insurance package.
Several beneficiaries commended Yishawu for the initiative and other empowerment programmes he has introduced in the constituency.
Mrs. Bunmi Layeni said the lawmaker had been “kind” to residents, adding that they had benefited from what she described as the dividends of democracy.
Another beneficiary, Mrs. Sekinat Bello, expressed appreciation to Yishawu for providing two years of free healthcare coverage in addition to his other interventions.
Uleh Joseph, a resident of the constituency from Cross River State, said he had benefited from several of the lawmaker’s programmes, while Abdulateef Abdulamin said the initiative was unexpected but appreciated.
Mrs. Cecilia Owai, a resident of Mokotu Barracks, said she had previously benefited from one of Yishawu’s programmes, where she received glasses, and was also currently enrolled in his skill acquisition programme, where she is learning fashion.
Other beneficiaries, including Miss Whesu Bernice and Mrs. Ogundipe Olusola, also commended the initiative, noting that it would help residents who could not afford hospital bills to access medical care.
The beneficiaries expressed prayers for the lawmaker and urged him to sustain his intervention programmes across Eti-Osa Constituency II.
