The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has offered international whistleblowers between 2.5% and 5% of assets recovered through information they provide on Nigerian funds allegedly hidden abroad.
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede announced the incentive while delivering a lecture at the 43rd International Symposium on Economic Crime in Cambridge, United Kingdom.
According to EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale, Mr Olukoyede said the commission was willing to reward individuals who provided credible information leading to the recovery of stolen Nigerian assets anywhere in the world.
“If any one of you is privy to where Nigerian assets are stolen or taken to anywhere in the world, we have an incentive for you; between 2.5 per cent and 5 per cent, it’s going to go back to you upon recovery,” he said.
He added that successful whistleblowers could become “multi-millionaires” if their information resulted in significant asset recoveries.
Mr Olukoyede also said the EFCC had recovered and secured the forfeiture of assets worth more than $500m during his first three years as chairman.
He attributed the recoveries to improved investigative professionalism, support from the judiciary and credible intelligence.
The commission has increasingly focused on tracing and recovering assets allegedly linked to corruption and financial crimes, including funds believed to have been moved outside Nigeria.
