Norway’s King Harald V has died at the age of 89, bringing an end to his 35-year reign over the Scandinavian nation.
The Royal Palace announced that the monarch died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026. Harald, who ascended the throne in 1991, was Europe’s oldest reigning monarch at the time of his death.
His death immediately triggered a transition of power, with his son, Crown Prince Haakon, succeeding him as King Haakon VIII in accordance with Norway’s Constitution. The new monarch formally confirmed his accession in an extraordinary Council of State.
Flags were lowered to half-mast at the Royal Palace in Oslo as thousands of Norwegians gathered to lay flowers, wreaths and messages in honour of the late king. A period of national mourning has also been declared across the country.
Harald was widely respected for his warmth, humility and efforts to modernise the Norwegian monarchy. His response to national tragedies, including the 2011 attacks, further strengthened his reputation as a unifying figure.
Tributes have poured in from around the world, with Britain’s King Charles III describing Harald as his “dear cousin” and mourning the loss of a monarch known for his warmth and dedication. Other European royals and world leaders have also expressed condolences to the Norwegian royal family and people.
King Harald is expected to be laid to rest in the royal mausoleum at Akershus Fortress, with his state funeral scheduled for September 9.
