The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has expressed sadness over the death of a final-year student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Oluwaseun Oluwole.
The university said it received information about an emergency involving the student on Tuesday, at about 1:30 p.m.
According to a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, the incident occurred at an apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.
Following the report, members of the university’s Quick Response and Security Team immediately proceeded to the location and contacted the Nigeria Police.
Police officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, later joined the university security personnel at the scene.
The student was subsequently taken to the university’s Health Centre for medical attention, where a medical doctor certified him dead.
OAU said it was concerned about the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and had handed over relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the police to support the ongoing investigation.
The university added that its Student Affairs authorities had been informed to take necessary follow-up measures, particularly concerning the welfare and support of students who may have been affected by the incident.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed condolences to the family, friends, classmates and colleagues of the deceased.
Bamire also expressed concern for members of the university community who may be emotionally affected by the incident.
The university urged students and other members of the community to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information while the police investigation continues.
OAU said further information on the circumstances surrounding the death would be communicated through the appropriate authorities as the investigation progresses.
