Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have foiled a robbery operation at a student hostel in the Eruku/Agbon area of Ewekoro Local Government Area, arresting two suspects and recovering stolen properties.
The suspects, identified as Waris Dauda and Tiamiyu Abiodun, were arrested after police operatives responded to a distress call reporting an armed robbery at a student hostel in the community.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, by the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi B. Babasiyi, the incident occurred at about 2:40 a.m.
Following the distress call, operatives of the Ewekoro Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, were promptly deployed to the scene.
The police said the suspects fled upon sighting the operatives, abandoning their loot in a school bag.
The officers pursued the fleeing suspects and arrested two of them.
A search of the abandoned bag reportedly led to the recovery of 11 assorted iPhones, one HP laptop and various items of clothing.
The police said victims of the robbery had identified the recovered properties as theirs.
Preliminary investigation also revealed that the gang allegedly forced one of the victims to transfer ₦200,000 to a bank account during the operation.
Detectives have visited the crime scene, documented evidence of forced entry and secured the recovered exhibits.
The police added that search warrants executed at the suspects’ residences did not yield further incriminating items.
The two suspects and the recovered properties are being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation and prosecution.
Meanwhile, the police said efforts were ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang who escaped and identify the owner of the beneficiary account into which the alleged ₦200,000 transfer was made.
The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the Ewekoro operatives for their vigilance and swift response.
Ojajuni reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting students, residents and communities across the state, while urging residents to promptly report suspicious activities and security threats.
The Command also advised operators of off-campus student hostels and landlords to maintain emergency contact numbers for quick response during security emergencies.
