The Federal Government has commenced the installation of solar-powered streetlights along sections of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway as rehabilitation work continues on the major highway.
The new streetlights are already visible around the Abule-Egba to Ijaye axis of Lagos, with residents and motorists saying the improved illumination has made movement along the corridor easier at night.
The Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway is a major transport route connecting Lagos with communities in Ogun State and carries heavy vehicular traffic daily.
The lighting project is being implemented alongside the Federal Government’s ongoing rehabilitation and reconstruction of sections of the Lagos–Ota–Abeokuta Expressway, aimed at improving the condition of the road and easing movement along the corridor.
A resident, Olusola Wale, told LAGOS EYE NEWS that the new streetlights had improved visibility and provided a greater sense of security for people travelling along the route at night.
“This is commendable. Now we are feeling the impact of President Tinubu in our area in Lagos,” he said.
Wale said some sections of the expressway had previously been poorly illuminated, creating difficulties for motorists and pedestrians travelling after dark.
“This expressway was so dark before that you would be afraid to get home because of criminals who could rob passers-by. But now everywhere is lighting up,” he said.
“You can see who is coming from afar, and crossing the expressway has become easier because of the improved visibility.”
He, however, urged motorists to remain cautious as rehabilitation work continues, particularly around sections where traffic diversions and construction activities are ongoing.
“Motorists should drive carefully, obey traffic directions and exercise patience, especially whenever people want to cross the expressway,” he said.
Wale also called for increased investment in basic infrastructure, including roads and street lighting, saying such projects have a direct impact on residents’ daily lives.
“We need more of this from the president. Nigerians do not demand too much, but we need good road networks, streetlights, affordable transportation and other basic amenities,” he said.
He urged local government authorities in Lagos State to complement federal and state infrastructure projects by paying greater attention to development within their respective communities.
Wale also called for stronger coordination among the federal, state and local governments to monitor infrastructure projects and identify areas requiring urgent intervention.
“We are expecting local government chairmen in Lagos State to concentrate on developing their communities to complement the efforts of the federal and state governments,” he said.
“There should be a platform where the federal and state governments can monitor development at local government level and enable residents to report areas that are being neglected and affecting them.”
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that traffic management measures are currently in place around some sections of the expressway where rehabilitation work is being carried out.
Motorists have been advised to reduce their speed, obey traffic signs and directions from traffic officials, and exercise patience around construction zones.
The installation of the solar-powered streetlights is expected to improve visibility after dark, while the ongoing rehabilitation is aimed at improving the road’s condition and easing movement along the Lagos–Ota–Abeokuta corridor.
Motorists and other road users have been urged to exercise caution and comply with safety instructions as work continues.
