The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council, has declared an indefinite strike following the death of a deputy director in the state’s Ministry of Secondary Education, amid allegations that the deceased was assaulted by thugs allegedly acting on the orders of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu.
The strike was declared by the state NLC Chairman, Dr Goodluck Oforbruku, while addressing protesting civil servants at the Chike Edozien Secretariat in Asaba on Friday.
The deceased, identified as Mr Unity Adedah, was reportedly tied up and beaten by suspected thugs before his death earlier in the day.
The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the alleged involvement of the commissioner, had yet to be independently established at the time of filing this report.
The labour union’s decision to embark on an indefinite strike followed the incident, which has raised concerns among workers in the state’s public service.
