Osun State has risen to fifth position nationwide in the 2026 National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination, with 74.31 per cent of its candidates securing at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
The latest performance represents a significant improvement in the state’s standing in the national examination ranking, according to the Osun State Government.
Governor Ademola Adeleke, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, described the result as an indication that the administration’s interventions in the education sector are yielding positive results.
The governor congratulated the students, teachers, parents, school administrators and other stakeholders who contributed to the state’s performance.
Adeleke said Osun had maintained a single-digit position in the national NECO ranking in 2024, 2025 and 2026, marking a sustained improvement in the state’s education outcomes.
He noted that the latest result represented a major improvement from the state’s 33rd position in the 2022 NECO ranking.
“Osun has moved from 33rd position in the 2022 NECO ranking to 5th in 2026, while improving its pass rate to 74.31 per cent. This is encouraging, and it shows that our sustained interventions in the education sector are yielding positive results,” the governor said.
According to Adeleke, the improvement was driven by deliberate investments in the education sector, including the recruitment of additional teachers to strengthen the teaching workforce.
He also cited improved workers’ welfare and efforts to create a more conducive environment for teaching and learning across public schools as part of the measures contributing to the development.
The governor said the latest NECO result had further strengthened his administration’s resolve to sustain investment in education and improve learning outcomes across the state.
He said the administration’s broader objective was to build an education system capable of equipping Osun children with the knowledge, skills and opportunities required to succeed beyond the classroom.
“This result is encouraging, but we see it as a reason to do more. We will continue to invest in our schools, improve the learning environment, support our teachers and provide our students with the necessary tools to excel.
“We are building an education system that prepares our young people not only for examinations but for life,” Adeleke said.
The governor assured residents that ongoing interventions in the education sector would be sustained and expanded.
He also urged students across the state to remain committed to their studies and continue to strive for academic excellence.
