Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to remain patriotic and committed to peace, unity and justice as the country celebrates its 66th Independence Anniversary.
Jonathan, in his Independence Day message, described the anniversary as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey as an independent nation, noting that the country had overcome several challenges through collective resilience.
He recalled that Nigeria gained independence 66 years ago and assumed responsibility for determining its national destiny.
The former president urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in faith and hope while strengthening national unity, despite the challenges facing the country.
Jonathan also called on citizens to demonstrate democratic maturity as Nigeria prepares for another electoral season in the coming months.
He urged Nigerians to prioritise actions that would safeguard peace, national unity and justice, stressing the importance of responsible citizenship during the electoral period.
According to him, Nigeria has enormous opportunities for sustainable development if its diversity and abundant human and natural resources are effectively harnessed.
He particularly encouraged young people and other citizens to remain hopeful, courageous and committed to building a country that guarantees a prosperous future for coming generations.
Jonathan, however, stressed that achieving the desired future requires responsible leadership, urging leaders at all levels to demonstrate greater patriotism and accountability.
He said the country’s pressing social and economic challenges must be addressed through personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability and strict adherence to the rule of law.
The former president further called for renewed dedication to national service, urging Nigerians to work collectively towards building a peaceful, secure and equitable nation for present and future generations.
