There was pandemonium in Iyin-Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Thursday after a commercial motorcyclist crashed while allegedly attempting to evade operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
According to eyewitnesses, the motorcyclist, who was travelling from Ado-Ekiti, was flagged down by FRSC officials at the entrance to Iyin-Ekiti but allegedly failed to stop and attempted to evade the officers.
One of the FRSC operatives was said to have crossed the motorcyclist’s path in an attempt to stop him, resulting in a collision that left the rider critically injured. An FRSC officer was also reportedly hit during the incident.
As of the time of filing this report, the condition of the motorcyclist remained unknown. Eyewitnesses said he lost consciousness immediately after the crash.
The incident reportedly triggered outrage among residents and passersby at the scene, with some blaming the FRSC operatives for the accident and questioning the approach adopted in attempting to stop the motorcyclist.
Residents called on the road safety agency to ensure that its operatives exercise greater caution and professionalism when apprehending motorists who fail to obey traffic instructions.
They also urged the FRSC to adopt safer enforcement procedures to prevent avoidable accidents, injuries and possible loss of lives.
