Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged residents to remain vigilant against cybercrime and adopt basic digital safety practices to protect themselves from online threats.
Sanwo-Olu made the call on Monday as Lagos joined the global community to mark October as Cybersecurity Awareness Month, aimed at promoting safer digital practices and strengthening cybersecurity awareness.
The governor in a statement signed on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, stressed that cybersecurity was a shared responsibility, urging residents to understand common cyber risks and take proactive measures to protect themselves from cybercriminals.
He noted that many victims of cybercrime lacked knowledge of basic digital safety practices, underscoring the importance of public education in preventing online fraud and other cyber threats.
According to the state government, Lagos is participating in the global campaign led by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), which focuses on securing digital systems, improving cyber hygiene and equipping citizens with practical online safety measures.
The government said that over the past three years, the Sanwo-Olu administration had pursued cybersecurity initiatives through the Cybersecurity Advisory Board and the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (MIST) to strengthen digital trust and improve security across government institutions, businesses and communities.
It added that Lagos launched the Lagos State Cybersecurity Guidelines earlier this year, providing a framework for small, medium and large businesses to adopt security measures suited to their operations and protect their digital assets.
The state government also highlighted investments in cybersecurity training, public awareness and professional development across public institutions.
It said Lagos was working towards milestones, including ISO 27001 certification, alongside other initiatives to strengthen digital trust and safeguard critical digital infrastructure.
As part of activities for the month, MIST and the Cybersecurity Advisory Board, led by Professor Fene Osakwe, will roll out awareness campaigns across social and traditional media in English, Yoruba and Pidgin English.
The campaigns will provide practical guidance on identifying phishing scams, creating strong passwords, enabling multifactor authentication and regularly updating digital devices.
The state government said the initiatives were part of its commitment to building a digitally secure, innovative and resilient economy.
Lagos State consequently urged residents to stay informed, remain alert and practise safe online habits throughout Cybersecurity Awareness Month and beyond.
