Two Singapore-flagged container ships have been struck by unidentified projectiles in separate incidents in the Strait of Hormuz on October 13 and 14, with one vessel catching fire and sinking, according to Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority.

The authority said the GFS Pride caught fire after sustaining damage and later sank. All 21 crew members were safely evacuated without injuries.

The second vessel, GFS Giselle, sustained hull damage but managed to reach a safe anchorage under its own power. All 22 crew members were reported safe.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said a cargo ship sank after hitting a naval mine while travelling along what it described as an unauthorised route. However, it remains unclear whether the statement referred to the GFS Pride.

The identities of those responsible for the incidents have not been independently confirmed.

Footage circulating online appeared to show several small boats gathering near the sinking site, where shipping containers were seen floating in the water.

The presence of the boats raised speculation that individuals might have been attempting to retrieve floating cargo. However, their identities, intentions and whether any goods were recovered remain unverified.

The floating containers and debris have also raised concerns about potential navigational hazards for other vessels transiting the strategic waterway.
