The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has launched a nationwide enforcement operation targeting undocumented immigrants accused of fraudulently obtaining benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed the operation to Fox News, with four Haitian nationals reportedly arrested in the initial phase.

The individuals identified as Rubstony Junior Theodore, Wilbert Jean Baptiste, Louis Jean and Jhensly Charles were accused of entering the United States unlawfully before allegedly accessing the food assistance programme.

According to reports, Theodore had previously been arrested on allegations involving larceny, obstruction of officers and trespassing.

ICE described the arrests as the beginning of a broader enforcement campaign targeting alleged SNAP benefits fraud involving undocumented immigrants.

The agency said the operation would continue as investigators pursue other suspects believed to have fraudulently accessed the programme, which provides food assistance to eligible low-income households in the United States.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the government would prioritise preventing the misuse of taxpayer-funded welfare programmes.

He argued that individuals who are unlawfully present in the country should not benefit from public assistance programmes when they are not eligible under applicable laws.

Mullin also maintained that fraud involving public funds could have serious consequences, even when the alleged offences were non-violent.

He said the administration intended to expand enforcement efforts and pursue individuals suspected of defrauding American taxpayers.

The operation forms part of the Trump administration’s broader immigration enforcement agenda, with authorities indicating that further arrests and deportations could follow as investigations progress.

However, eligibility for SNAP benefits is determined by federal law, which permits certain categories of non-citizens to qualify under specific conditions. Consequently, unlawful immigration status and alleged benefits fraud are separate legal issues, and individual cases depend on the applicable eligibility rules and evidence.
