The Lagos State Government has commenced the installation of boundary demarcation signposts along the state’s borders to prevent encroachment and promote peaceful co-existence among neighbouring communities and states.

The exercise is being carried out by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development to clarify boundary locations and address ambiguities that could trigger disputes between communities and neighbouring states.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Kikelomo Bolarinwa, disclosed this at the commencement of the exercise, saying the state government was committed to clearly marking boundaries in accordance with the official specifications of the Office of the Surveyor-General.

Bolarinwa said the installation of the signposts was a practical step towards ensuring that recognised boundaries were properly indicated and respected.

She explained that the initiative would also help curb encroachment from neighbouring states and ensure that residents of border communities were adequately captured in government welfare programmes and infrastructure development plans.

According to her, improved infrastructure and targeted development in rural and border communities would boost local economic activities, improve living conditions and reduce rural-to-urban migration.

The permanent secretary urged residents of border communities to protect the installed signposts and refrain from vandalising them or engaging in activities capable of disrupting law and order.

She warned that anyone found demolishing the signposts would face appropriate sanctions, stressing that the government would not tolerate actions capable of undermining peaceful co-existence, social order and the ease of doing business in the state.

Bolarinwa added that the government would continue to extend the benefits of democracy to communities across Lagos through the implementation of its T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda, with particular attention to rural areas.

She said the initiative aligned with the state’s ambition of building a 21st-century economy and achieving a Greater Lagos.

The ministry said boundary signposts had so far been installed in Eredo-Epe, around Mojoda, Itokin-Ijebu Ode Road, Ikorodu-Shagamu Road, Ojodu-Alagbole Road, Owode-Apa Road and the Seme Border.

The exercise is expected to provide clearer boundary identification and support efforts to prevent disputes and promote harmonious relations among communities along Lagos State’s borders.
