Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election, describing the victory as an opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations between both countries.
In a congratulatory message issued in Abuja on Monday, President Tinubu said Lula’s renewed mandate would provide an opportunity to deepen the longstanding friendship between Nigeria and Brazil, which dates back to 1961.
The Nigerian president said both countries, as leading nations of the Global South, could work together to promote economic integration and advance their shared interests amid changing global dynamics.
Tinubu expressed Nigeria’s readiness to expand cooperation with Brazil across several sectors, including trade and investment, agriculture and food security, energy, oil and gas, manufacturing, science and technology, education, aviation and cultural exchange.
He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation with Brazil and advancing common priorities across Africa, South America and the wider Global South.
“On behalf of the people of Nigeria, I wish you a successful new term in office,” Tinubu said.
Lula’s re-election marks a historic milestone in Brazilian politics, securing him a fourth presidential term across two non-consecutive periods in office.
According to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court, Lula secured 51.79 per cent of valid votes in Sunday’s presidential run-off, defeating his challenger, Flávio Bolsonaro, who polled 48.21 per cent.
The result positions Lula to begin another term in January 2027, extending his political leadership in Latin America’s largest economy.
Nigeria and Brazil have maintained diplomatic relations since 1961, with both countries pursuing cooperation in trade, agriculture, energy, education and other areas of mutual interest.
