Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 Ballon d’Or-winning season has been voted the greatest in history in a fan poll, finishing ahead of Lionel Messi’s record-breaking 2012 campaign.

The Portuguese forward claimed the top spot in the B.O.A.T. (Ballon d’Or Of All Time) vote, which sought to identify the greatest season by a Ballon d’Or winner.

Ronaldo’s 2008 campaign was marked by outstanding individual and team achievements during his time at Manchester United. He scored 42 goals in all competitions, helping the English club win the Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star also won the European Golden Shoe and claimed his first Ballon d’Or at the age of 23.

Messi finished second with his remarkable 2012 campaign, during which the Argentine superstar scored a record 91 goals for club and country in a calendar year.

Ronaldo’s 2017 season secured third place in the fan poll, further highlighting the Portuguese forward’s influence on football during his career.

The result adds another chapter to the long-running debate over who enjoyed the greater individual peak between Ronaldo and Messi, two of football’s most celebrated players.

While the vote favoured Ronaldo’s 2008 season, the outcome reflects the preferences of participating fans rather than an official award ranking.
