FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono has reportedly expressed deep sorrow and remorse following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel after a collision during a Spanish second-division football match.

Owono, a 25-year-old goalkeeper from Equatorial Guinea, was involved in the incident that left De Miguel critically injured during Monday’s encounter between FC Andorra and CD Tenerife.

In a statement attributed to Owono circulating on social media, the goalkeeper expressed regret over the incident, describing it as an unfortunate football accident that he never expected would result in such a tragedy.

“I honestly haven’t slept since yesterday. I keep replaying that moment in my head, wishing I could turn back time. I never intended to hurt him. It was a football incident, and I never imagined it would end in such a terrible tragedy,” the statement read.

He also addressed the backlash against him on social media, where some users reportedly labelled him a murderer following the incident.

Owono reportedly said he understood the anger and grief surrounding De Miguel’s death but insisted that he never intended to cause harm.

He expressed condolences to the deceased footballer’s family, teammates and supporters, adding that he wished he could reverse what had happened.

“I am deeply sorry to Jesús de Miguel’s family, his teammates and everyone who loved him. I wish there was something I could do to change what happened, but sadly, there isn’t,” he reportedly said.

The tragic incident occurred during the closing stages of Monday’s match, which was tied 2-2, when Owono rushed out of his goal to challenge De Miguel for a long ball.

The goalkeeper’s knee struck the Tenerife forward during the challenge, leaving him unconscious on the pitch. Owono was immediately shown a red card, while medical personnel rushed to attend to the injured player.

De Miguel reportedly suffered cardiac arrest and was taken to hospital, where he was admitted to intensive care. CD Tenerife later confirmed that his condition had deteriorated before announcing his death at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. He was 30.

According to reports by the Associated Press (AP) and ITV News, Spanish police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter following the incident, with prosecutors also expected to be involved.

Meanwhile, FC Andorra and several prominent football clubs, including Real Madrid and Barcelona, have expressed condolences to De Miguel’s family and the Tenerife football community.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation also announced the postponement of scheduled cup fixtures as a mark of respect.
