Nigerian footballer Ashleigh Plumptre has attracted mixed reactions on social media after appearing in a cap bearing the image of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Super Falcons defender’s choice of headwear has sparked criticism from some Nigerians, with several social media users expressing displeasure over what they perceived as a show of support for the President.

The controversy has generated humorous, sarcastic and angry comments, with some users threatening to unfollow the footballer over the outfit.

In a post shared on Monday, Plumptre reportedly addressed the reactions, saying: “I honestly don’t know why some people keep saying the outfit resembles someone’s own. Should I be worried, or are you all seeing something I’m not? 😂❤️”

Among the comments, Prince Stephen described the controversy as humorous, writing:

“Ashley, this comic relief is both hilarious and theatrically satirical! 🤣🤣🤣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥”

Solomon Ekene, however, expressed a different opinion, saying: “The greatest horror image I have seen. This is horror frozen in times🙀😱😨.”

Peter Anyede also joked: “With this outfit for Halloween, nobody will invite you to play for Nigeria ooo.”

Similarly, Philips Peters suggested that the incident could affect her invitation to the national team, writing: “Them no go call u again….for camp…e sure me die.. our government no dey carry cruise play joke.”

Another social media user, Uzodimma Okechukwu, expressed stronger displeasure, threatening to unfollow the footballer.

He wrote: “Any day I see this cap on your head anywhere at all I will unfollow you, and I know that I am not alone on this, why will you put on the cap of our oppressor? Let this be the first and last.”

President Tinubu’s distinctive cap, featuring an infinity-shaped insignia, has become a recognisable symbol associated with his political identity and supporters.

In June 2024, former President Olusegun Obasanjo attracted similar online attention after appearing in a cap bearing an insignia resembling Tinubu’s. The incident generated speculation about his political affiliation. Pulse Nigeria +1
