The House of Representatives has passed a bill seeking to establish the Nigerian Employees’ Compensation Trust Fund Agency to provide financial protection and compensation for workers affected by workplace hazards.
The proposed agency is expected to ensure adequate compensation for employees who suffer death, injuries, diseases or disabilities arising from occupational hazards in the course of their duties.
The passage of the bill at Tuesday’s plenary gives the legislation the concurrence of both chambers of the National Assembly, following its earlier passage by the Senate.
The bill will now be transmitted to President Bola Tinubu for assent.
Meanwhile, lawmakers also passed two other bills, including one seeking to establish the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Institute as a centre for training, research and professional development.
Another bill passed by the House seeks to amend the EFCC Act.
In a related development, a proposal to establish the National School of Government as an institution dedicated to leadership development and effective policy delivery also scaled second reading.
The proposed institution is expected to strengthen leadership capacity and improve policy implementation across government institutions.
