The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has congratulated Algeria on the successful launch of the Alsat-3A Earth observation satellite, describing it as a major step forward for Africa’s space and geospatial capabilities.
In a statement, Mr Youssouf said the launch demonstrated Algeria’s leadership in space science and its commitment to using satellite technology to support sustainable development across the continent.
He noted that the satellite would play an important role in areas such as environmental monitoring, disaster risk reduction and evidence-based policymaking.
The African Union Commission said the high-resolution data generated by Alsat-3A is expected to support both national and continental development priorities, in line with the AU’s Agenda 2063 as well as the African Space Policy and Strategy.
The Commission also welcomed the international cooperation involved in the satellite’s launch, praising Algeria for its continued investment in the peaceful use of outer space for Africa’s shared development.
