President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has recognised Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, signalling firm support for the governor amid ongoing impeachment tensions.
The president’s position was made public by his Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, during a media briefing.
Mr Bwala said President Tinubu considers Governor Fubara the legitimate APC leader in Rivers State and would not support any move to undermine his administration.
He dismissed suggestions that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, could assume leadership of the party in the state, noting that Mr Wike is not a member of the APC.
“Leadership of the APC in Rivers State cannot be held by someone who does not belong to the party,” Mr Bwala said.
He added that President Tinubu had already accommodated Mr Wike politically by appointing him as FCT minister, describing the role as sufficient recognition of his contributions.
Mr Bwala also warned against attempts by lawmakers aligned with Mr Wike to impeach Governor Fubara, stressing that the ruling party would oppose any action that interferes with the governor’s constitutional responsibilities.
“The APC will firmly resist any attempt to obstruct the governor from performing his constitutional duties,” he said.
Rivers State has been gripped by political tensions following a rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Mr Wike, raising concerns about stability within the state’s political leadership.
