Manchester United suffered a nightmare start to the 2026/27 Premier League season after newly promoted Hull City secured a stunning 2-0 victory at the MKM Stadium on Saturday.
The result dealt an early blow to the optimism surrounding Michael Carrick’s first full Premier League season in charge of United, with the visitors producing a disappointing display despite entering the campaign with renewed expectations.
Hull took the lead in the 17th minute through Semi Ajayi, who capitalised on a defensive lapse from United during a set-piece. Nobel Mendy then doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 38th minute, again from a set-piece, leaving United facing a two-goal deficit before half-time.
United dominated possession for periods and registered 14 shots, but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against a disciplined Hull defence. The home side, meanwhile, impressed with their intensity, organisation and ability to win second balls.
Carrick had been encouraged by United’s preparations ahead of the campaign, while the club had strengthened its midfield with the arrivals of players including Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. However, those additions could not prevent United from being exposed defensively against the newly promoted side.
Marcus Rashford, returning to the United squad after his loan spell at Barcelona, was introduced from the bench but was unable to inspire a comeback. His return had generated considerable attention after the club confirmed that he would wear the No. 9 shirt this season.
For Hull, the victory was particularly significant. The Tigers were playing their first Premier League match in nine years and secured their first league victory over Manchester United since 1974.
The defeat leaves Carrick with plenty to address, particularly United’s vulnerability at set pieces, defensive organisation and lack of attacking sharpness.
With the season only beginning, the result is not necessarily a verdict on United’s campaign, but it represents a major early warning for Carrick and his players.
Hull City 2-0 Manchester United: Semi Ajayi 17’, Nobel Mendy 38’.
