The Lagos State Government has announced a partnership with telecommunications company MTN Nigeria to redevelop the Obalende underbridge into a modern transport hub.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Natural Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said on Tuesday that the project would transform the previously degraded area into a structured and secure facility known as the Y’ELLO Bus Park.
According to Mr Wahab, the redevelopment is aimed at reclaiming public space and improving transport infrastructure in the Obalende area. The new bus park will include an organised and regulated transport terminal, a recycling drop-off station, a road camp for Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) sweepers and security agencies, as well as more than 60 public toilet facilities. Kiosks and other essential amenities will also be provided for commuters and nearby residents.
He said the design places strong emphasis on safety, public health and environmental sustainability. Solar-powered lighting will be installed to improve night-time visibility, reduce blind spots and enhance the effectiveness of CCTV surveillance, measures intended to help reduce criminal activity in the area.
“The design prioritises safety, health, and aesthetics. Solar-powered lighting will improve night-time visibility, reduce blind spots, and enhance CCTV effectiveness, helping to curb criminal activities and improve overall security in the Obalende axis. A biodigester system is also being introduced to sustainably manage wastewater generated within the park, while a dedicated recycling station will discourage illegal waste disposal in the area, he said.
Mr Wahab added that the project aligns with the state’s climate and environmental goals. Solar panels will be installed to support energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, while tree planting is planned to improve air quality and enhance the area’s appearance.
He said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to making public spaces functional, sustainable and safe for residents, adding that the collaboration with MTN is part of broader efforts to build a cleaner and more resilient Lagos.
