Nigeria’s House of Representatives has passed the ₦58.47 trillion Appropriation Bill for 2026 to a second reading, moving the federal budget proposal further along the legislative process.
The bill progressed after a lead debate on the budget framework by the House Majority Leader, Julius Ihonvbere. Lawmakers adopted the motion without opposition.
Mr Ihonvbere urged members to back the proposals, saying the budget places priority on defence and security, as well as infrastructure development.
Earlier on Thursday, the House held a valedictory session in honour of the outgoing Clerk of the House, Yahaya Danzaria.
The Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, praised Mr Danzaria for what he described as a career marked by dedication to the stability, integrity and continuity of Nigeria’s parliament, and to the country’s democratic system.
The Appropriation Bill is expected to undergo further scrutiny at the committee stage before a final vote.
