An early morning fire outbreak on Monday razed parts of Singa Market, one of Kano’s major commercial centres, causing extensive damage to shops and goods.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed that it received a distress call at about 3:16 a.m. and immediately deployed firefighters to the scene.
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that as of 10 a.m., some sections of the market were still smouldering, while efforts continued to fully extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other areas.
Reacting to the incident, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibril Barau, expressed deep concern over the fire outbreak, describing Singa Market as one of the biggest commodity markets in Northern Nigeria.
The fire incident affected numerous shops and stores, leading to significant losses for traders.
“I sympathise with the traders and shop owners who suffered losses due to this unfortunate incident,” Barau said. “May Almighty Allah replace their losses with something far better.”
The Deputy Senate President also commended the Kano State Fire Service for its swift response and commitment to containing the fire, noting that their efforts helped prevent the blaze from spreading to other sections of the market.
The cause of the fire and the total extent of the damage are yet to be officially determined.
