India’s Prime Minister, Nerenda Modi has welcomed a decision by the United States to reduce tariffs on Made in India products to 18%, describing the move as a positive step for bilateral trade and cooperation.
Speaking after a phone call with US President Donald Trump, the Prime Minister said he was “delighted” by the announcement and thanked the US leader on behalf of India’s 1.4 billion people.
In a statement on Monday, he said the tariff reduction reflected the benefits of cooperation between “two large economies and the world’s largest democracies”, adding that closer ties would unlock “immense opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation”.
The Prime Minister also praised President Trump’s global leadership, saying it was “vital for global peace, stability and prosperity”, and reiterated India’s support for US-led peace efforts.
He added that he looked forward to working closely with the US president to deepen the partnership between the two countries and take bilateral relations “to unprecedented heights”.
The tariff cut is expected to boost Indian exports to the US and strengthen economic ties between the two nations.
