Cross-border railway routes between western Germany and eastern France are to be equipped with new trains in the coming months.
France’s Grand Est region said the modern trains are to run on the busy lines from Offenburg to Strasbourg and Müllheim to Mulhouse from May.
Other routes, such as Strasbourg-Karlsruhe, Metz-Trier and Metz-Saarbrücken, are set to receive the new trains from December.
From late 2027, the international routes are to see additional services, helping cross-border commuters and students.
The 30 new trains, procured for €388 million ($460 million), are already in service in France, which is bearing most of the costs.
Manufactured by Alstom, the trains are compatible with the different railway power networks of the two countries and have a diesel engine.
A tender process is being held to determine which railway company will operate the trains in future.
