Police in Isingiro District have arrested two men in connection with the alleged theft of matooke, a staple food crop, from a local farm.
Officers at Mbare Police Station said the suspects, identified as Ruhangariyo Samuel Innocent and Kamukama Alex, are accused of stealing six bunches of matooke from a plantation belonging to a resident of Kyabahesi Bahingi Cell.
According to police, the farm owner discovered the theft after visiting her garden and finding that several bunches of matooke had been cut and removed by unknown individuals. She reported the incident to officers and requested assistance, including the deployment of a police sniffer dog.
Police said the sniffer dog tracked a scent trail for about 200 metres from the scene to the home of Mr Ruhangariyo.
A search of the premises led to the recovery of six bunches of matooke believed to have been stolen.
Investigators said Mr Ruhangariyo, who is described as a neighbour of the complainant, later implicated Mr Kamukama, also known as “Kadogo”, who was subsequently arrested.
Police said both suspects remain in custody as investigations continue, and preparations are under way to bring formal charges.
