Three suspects have made their first court appearance in connection with the murder of a 22-year-old Nigerian student and e-hailing driver in South Africa.
Dikeledi Mphela, Goitsione Machidi and McClaren Mushwana appeared before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances over the death of Isaac Satlat.
Mr Satlat was reportedly on duty as an e-hailing driver at the time of the incident. His killing has prompted outrage in both South Africa and Nigeria, with calls for a thorough investigation and justice for the victim.
The three suspects were arrested last week. Prosecutors told the court that the accused had abandoned bail at this stage of proceedings. They were brought to court under heavy security, and video footage showed them entering the courtroom for the first time since their arrest.
South Africa’s police service, the South African Police Service (SAPS), said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing are ongoing. Officers are working to establish the sequence of events that led to Mr Satlat’s death.
Officials at the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa said they were closely monitoring the case and were in contact with South African authorities.
According to local media reports, the case has been postponed to allow for further investigations. The court is expected to hear additional details when proceedings resume.
