Benin palace queen faces possible removal over Peller’s visit |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The Benin Traditional Council has warned that a queen in the palace of the Oba of Benin could be removed following an incident involving social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja.

In a statement signed by its Secretary, Frank Irabor, the council described the episode as a “serious breach of protocol” and a desecration of the palace.

According to the council, Mr Adelaja, widely known as Peller, entered the palace on 6 March 2026 during a nationwide tour without obtaining the required authorisation. It said his presence, along with that of his entourage, caused “significant embarrassment” and disrupted peace within the palace grounds.

“The palace is not a public thoroughfare or a location for frivolous content creation; it is the ancient and spiritual seat of the Oba of Benin,” the statement said.

Following a preliminary investigation, the council confirmed that disciplinary measures have been taken against those involved. A chief linked to the incident has been suspended indefinitely, while a palace staff member, identified as Mr Omuemu, has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force and charged in court for allegedly facilitating the unauthorised access.

The council also said a queen who appeared in the incident is undergoing disciplinary proceedings, which could lead to her removal from the palace in line with Benin customs and traditions.

It added that Mr Adelaja has been invited to appear before a committee of chiefs to explain his actions but has not yet complied. The council said he is expected to issue an unreserved written apology for the incident.
