Land Grabbing: Renewal Group Seeks Justice Over Alleged Police Excesses in Lagos |LAGOS EYE NEWS

A civil society group, the Renewal Group, has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently establish a public inquiry into allegations of corruption, land grabbing, abuse of office, and human rights violations against the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh.

The petition was signed by members of the group, which listed its address as Triangle Mall Extension, Suite F26C, along the Lekki–Epe Expressway in the Lekki area of Lagos.

In a petition dated March 16, 2026, and addressed to the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the group alleged that the police commissioner has been involved in activities that undermine the rule of law in Lagos State.

The group claimed that under Jimoh’s leadership, armed policemen were allegedly deployed to assist in forceful takeovers of citizens’ lands across the state.

According to the petition, property owners who resist such actions are often arrested and taken before mobile courts, which allegedly result in their immediate remand at Kirikiri Prison.

The Renewal Group further alleged that court orders obtained by affected citizens are frequently ignored, claiming that the police commissioner has refused to accept court processes in some cases, thereby preventing aggrieved parties from pursuing legal redress.

The petition also stated that complaints previously submitted to the Inspector General of Police and the Police Service Commission have allegedly not been addressed.

Citing a recent incident, the group alleged that a car owner was wrongfully accused of driving against traffic and subsequently detained, claiming that a police officer had earlier taken the vehicle and driven it on a one-way road. The individual is reportedly being held at Kirikiri Prison.

“If there is any protest from the owners of the property, they are arrested and taken to a mobile court that immediately sends them to Kirikiri Prison,” the letter added.

The group further claimed that certain influential individuals, including presidential advisers, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police at the Police Service Commission, a serving senator, and some senior officials in the Lagos State Government, were allegedly providing backing for the commissioner. It said these claims could be substantiated during a public hearing.

The Renewal Group urged President Tinubu to intervene and institute a public inquiry, arguing that such a move would reveal the full extent of the allegations and help restore public confidence in policing in Lagos.
