Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has announced that the 2027 general election will mark his final attempt to become President of Nigeria, drawing reactions across the political landscape.
Speaking during an interview on Television’s Prime Time programme, Atiku acknowledged his long-standing presidential ambition and multiple past attempts, noting that he intends to make one last bid in 2027.
“I have contested several times,” he said during the interview, adding that the next election cycle would represent his final opportunity to lead the country at the highest level.
Atiku, who previously served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007, has been a consistent contender in Nigeria’s presidential elections, flying the flag of different political parties over the years, most recently the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that the declaration could reshape early alignments ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly within the opposition. Some members of the PDP have expressed cautious optimism, arguing that Atiku’s experience remains an asset, while others believe the party may need to consider generational change.
A senior PDP chieftain, who spoke on condition of anonymity, noted that the former vice president’s statement could “open the door for strategic negotiations and coalition-building” within opposition ranks.
Within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), some party figures downplayed the announcement, describing it as part of a familiar political cycle. One APC spokesperson said the focus should remain on governance rather than “recycling old ambitions.”
With the 2027 general election still some time away, Atiku’s declaration is among the earliest high-profile signals of political positioning. Observers say it may trigger renewed debates within opposition parties about leadership, strategy, and voter appeal.
As the political climate gradually builds, attention is expected to shift toward potential alliances, emerging candidates, and the direction of major parties in what could be a highly competitive race.
