No fewer than 130 Nigerians have registered with the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa to return home following a wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, disclosed that arrangements are in progress to facilitate voluntary repatriation for affected citizens.
“Arrangements are currently underway for voluntary repatriation flights for Nigerians who wish to return home,” she said. “So far, about 130 Nigerians have registered with our Mission in South Africa, and we expect this number to increase as engagement continues.”
A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja noted that the Federal Government is collaborating with Nigerian community groups and relevant authorities to ensure a safe and orderly evacuation process.
The government has also directed leaders of Nigerian organizations in South Africa to begin compiling lists of citizens willing to return but unable to afford airfare.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Government has summoned the South African High Commissioner over the recent xenophobic attacks, expressing concern about the safety of foreign nationals in the country.
