The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday inaugurated Mrs. Adenike Oshinowo as its first female Clerk, marking a historic milestone in the administrative history of the legislature.
The ceremony, which also served as a valedictory session for the outgoing Clerk, Barrister Olalekan Onafeko, was attended by lawmakers, dignitaries, family members and well-wishers.
Speaking at the event, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa congratulated Mrs. Oshinowo on her appointment, describing it as well-deserved and expressing confidence in her capacity to deliver on her new role.
Mrs. Oshinowo, a legal practitioner and seasoned public administrator, brings over two decades of experience in the Lagos State Public Service to her new position.
The Speaker also paid glowing tribute to the outgoing Clerk, Barrister Onafeko, commending his years of dedicated service to the Assembly.
Obasa noted that Onafeko’s tenure, which began in 2002, was worthy of celebration and recognition, adding that his contribution to legislative administration would not be forgotten.
“He has served from 2002 till now. Even if he had done nothing, the years spent in service are enough. He must not be denied the funfair and celebration. I wish him success, long life and peace of mind as he steps out as former Clerk,” Obasa said.
Lawmakers also took turns to commend Onafeko for his professionalism, discipline and contributions to the development of the Assembly’s administrative structure.
Hon. Aro Moshood described him as a diligent public servant who distinguished himself from the outset of his career, while Hon. Nureni Akinsanya praised him as a committed legislative administrator whose service left a lasting impact on parliamentary excellence.
“Your dedication, professionalism and commitment to parliamentary excellence have been exemplary, leaving an indelible mark on the Assembly. As you chart a new course in life, I wish you continued success, good health and even greater achievements in all your future endeavours,” Akinsanya said.
Hon. Abiodun Tobun also commended the outgoing Clerk for his discipline and integrity, particularly his commitment to confidentiality in the discharge of his duties.
“The sixth Clerk of the House is bowing out and I congratulate you. You refused to divulge information as Clerk even when we were pressured. Congratulations,” Tobun said.
Hon. Desmond Elliot joined other lawmakers in applauding both the Speaker and the outgoing Clerk, describing Onafeko as a loyal and dependable officer of the Assembly.
Other members similarly commended his service and wished him success in his future endeavours.
Barrister Onafeko began his career at the Assembly following his deployment in 2000, where he demonstrated strong leadership and administrative competence.
He served in various capacities, including Principal Administrative and Human Resources Officer, before rising to the position of Clerk of the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2020.
