The Federal Government has convened an emergency inter-agency meeting involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police Force to tackle rising cooking gas prices and allegations of hoarding and diversion of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) across the country.
The meeting follows recent increases in LPG prices, which have generated public concern and intensified calls for government intervention to stabilize the domestic energy market.
According to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the coordinated effort is designed to improve supply efficiency, ensure equitable distribution, and address illegal market activities believed to be contributing to price instability.
Officials disclosed that the strategy will involve enhanced surveillance of LPG distribution channels, stricter enforcement against suspected hoarders, and closer monitoring of depots and retail outlets nationwide.
Security and anti-corruption agencies have also been tasked with identifying and dismantling networks allegedly responsible for creating artificial scarcity and diverting cooking gas intended for domestic use.
The EFCC and DSS are expected to lead intelligence gathering and enforcement operations, while the Nigeria Police Force will provide operational support where required.
Government officials stated that the intervention forms part of broader efforts to stabilize energy prices and protect consumers from exploitative practices amid prevailing economic challenges.
Meanwhile, marketers and distributors have been urged to comply with existing regulations, with authorities warning that individuals or companies found engaging in hoarding, diversion, or price manipulation will face strict sanctions.
