The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce) has commenced enforcement operations along the Alaba Rago corridor of the Mile 2–Badagry Expressway following the expiration of the 72-hour quit notice earlier issued to traders and occupants operating illegally within the area.
Taskforce officials were deployed to the corridor on the commencement day of the exercise, targeting illegal street trading, makeshift structures, and other obstructions on highways, walkways, medians, setbacks, and public spaces in violation of the state’s environmental regulations.
The operation, conducted in collaboration with relevant enforcement agencies, is aimed at restoring order, improving public safety, easing traffic congestion, and addressing longstanding environmental challenges along the strategic Lagos–Badagry Expressway corridor.
Prior to the enforcement, the Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, had embarked on a sensitisation campaign, urging traders and occupants to voluntarily comply with the government’s directive by vacating prohibited locations before the expiration of the notice.
According to CSP Akerele, the enforcement became necessary following persistent complaints from motorists, residents, pedestrians, visitors, and environmental stakeholders over traffic obstruction, environmental degradation, and security concerns linked to illegal activities along the corridor.
He reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws, protecting public infrastructure, and maintaining the standards expected of a modern megacity.
The Taskforce Chairman also warned that all structures and items found obstructing public spaces or contravening existing environmental laws would be removed in accordance with the state’s regulations.
The enforcement exercise is being supervised by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources as part of ongoing efforts to promote a cleaner, safer, and more orderly environment across the state.
