FG to Restructure NYSC, Introduce 11 Specialised Corps Streams |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to restructure the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation programme into a three-phase system as part of broader reforms aimed at equipping corps members with practical skills, improving employability, and aligning national service with Nigeria’s workforce needs.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, disclosed the proposed reforms during a stakeholders’ engagement on the ongoing review of the NYSC scheme.

According to Usman, the six-week orientation camp will be divided into three distinct phases. The first two weeks will focus on civic responsibility, national values, patriotism, leadership development, and citizenship education.

The second phase, spanning another two weeks, will concentrate on career mapping, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, business planning, and access to finance, with the objective of preparing corps members for economic opportunities after service.

The final two weeks will provide specialised training tailored to each participant’s chosen career path, enabling corps members to acquire industry-relevant skills before deployment.

As part of the reforms, prospective corps members will select one of 11 newly established specialised streams during registration. These include Agric Corps, Medical Corps, Education Corps, Tech and Digital Corps, Legal Corps, Public Service Corps, Infrastructure Corps, Green Corps, Enterprise Corps, Creative Economy Corps, and Paramilitary and Security Corps.

Usman said the specialised streams are designed to provide practical training that reflects graduates’ academic backgrounds, career aspirations, and the country’s evolving manpower requirements.

She also disclosed that the Federal Government is reviewing the NYSC deployment process, with greater consideration for prevailing security challenges across the country. The revised framework, she noted, is expected to improve the safety of corps members while ensuring more effective deployment based on national needs.

The proposed reforms form part of the Tinubu administration’s wider agenda to reposition the NYSC into a more skills-driven and development-oriented national service programme. Government officials have previously indicated that the reforms are intended to strengthen youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, and job creation, while enhancing the scheme’s contribution to national development.

The NYSC management has also reiterated its commitment to collaborating with relevant ministries, agencies, and private sector partners to ensure the successful implementation of the reforms once approved by the Federal Government.
