Niger Arrests 16 Under New Law Criminalizing Same-Sex Relations |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Niger government have arrested at least 16 people following the enforcement of a new law criminalizing same-sex sexual relations, according to a judicial source.

Those detained reportedly include customs and police officials, as well as civilians. The source added that the operation is still ongoing, raising the possibility of further arrests.

Under the new legislation, individuals convicted of engaging in same-sex sexual relations face prison terms of between five and 10 years, in addition to substantial fines.

The law also imposes penalties of up to 20 years’ imprisonment for same-sex marriage and prescribes heavy fines for LGBTQ+ rights organizations.

The legislation represents a significant policy shift in Niger, where consensual same-sex relations between adults had not previously been criminalized.
