The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has commended the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the successful rescue of 39 abducted pupils and five teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The commendation came on Thursday during a visit by a UNICEF delegation, led by the organisation’s Executive Director, Catherine Russell, to the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at the State House in Abuja.
Russell praised the government’s efforts in securing the release of the victims, describing the rescue as a significant step in protecting children affected by conflict and insecurity.
She noted that children are often the most vulnerable during crises, stressing the need for continued efforts to safeguard them from violence, displacement and abduction.
“Investing in women and children is an investment in the future of the nation,” Russell said, adding that UNICEF remains committed to supporting Nigeria in advancing the welfare and protection of children.
The UNICEF Executive Director also lauded the First Lady for prioritising women and children through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), particularly her advocacy for birth registration.
According to Russell, Nigeria recorded an increase of about 14 million registered children within two years, attributing the achievement to the collaborative efforts of the government and the First Lady’s advocacy.
She described birth registration as a critical step in guaranteeing children’s rights and securing their future.
Russell further commended Senator Tinubu for her role in campaigns against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and other initiatives aimed at improving the well-being of women and children.
Responding, the First Lady expressed appreciation for UNICEF’s continued partnership with Nigeria, especially during challenging periods.
She welcomed the rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers, stressing that children remain central to national development.
According to her, investing in children through education and social protection is essential for the country’s long-term growth.
Senator Tinubu also highlighted the challenge of out-of-school children, particularly Almajiri children, noting that the government is working to provide them with access to formal education and vocational skills through specialised schools.
The UNICEF delegation included the Country Representative, Wafaa Saeed Abdelatef; Chief of Staff, Ted Mary; Senior Adviser on Communication, Marlene Jensen; Head of Project, Marline Serrano; and Executive Specialist, Nabila Jamshed.
