The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has reaffirmed the Scheme’s commitment to maintaining a strong and mutually beneficial partnership with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
General Nafiu gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by members of the National Executive Council of NANS to the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja.
He noted that NANS has been a consistent supporter of the Scheme since its establishment and stated that the NYSC remains open to strategic collaboration with the students’ body whenever necessary.
According to the Director-General, the core mandate of the NYSC is to promote national unity and integration, adding that the Scheme relies significantly on the support of Nigerian students, as every undergraduate is a prospective Corps Member.
Nafiu said the NYSC is committed to strengthening its Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme as part of efforts to complement the Federal Government’s initiatives aimed at reducing unemployment and encouraging self-reliance among young Nigerians.
He also urged NANS to continue playing an active role as a key stakeholder in public policy by contributing positively to the sustenance of Nigeria’s democratic process.
The Director-General further disclosed that NANS would be involved in the pre-mobilisation process and other activities leading to the Orientation Course, noting that the association’s close relationship with students across tertiary institutions positions it to provide valuable support to the Scheme.
He added that ongoing reforms within the NYSC, particularly its digital transformation initiatives, are designed to enhance efficiency and improve service delivery across the organisation.
Earlier, the Senate President of NANS, Comrade Moses Ikeabuchi, said the visit was aimed at familiarising the association with the leadership of the NYSC and identifying areas of collaboration, especially in Corps mobilisation, for the mutual benefit of both organisations.
Ikeabuchi pledged the continued support of NANS for the Scheme, assuring that the association would remain a constructive voice on issues affecting Nigerian students and prospective Corps Members.
Also speaking, the National Vice President of NANS, Comrade Sadique Zango, commended the NYSC for its commitment to the welfare and accommodation of Corps Members. He called for closer engagement between the Scheme and students before mobilisation to ensure a smoother orientation and national service experience.
