Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected as the new Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
President Faye takes over the rotating leadership of the West African regional bloc following a decision by ECOWAS Heads of State and Government at their summit.
Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, who had reportedly sought a second consecutive term as ECOWAS Chairman, was not re-elected after leaders instead endorsed President Faye to lead the Authority.
As Chairman, President Faye will preside over meetings of the ECOWAS Authority and help guide the regional body’s efforts on political cooperation, peace and security, economic integration, and other key issues affecting West Africa.
President Faye’s election comes at a time when ECOWAS continues to address security challenges, democratic governance, and regional integration across its member states.
His appointment has been welcomed by supporters in Senegal and across the region, with many extending their congratulations following the announcement.
