The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has commenced a nationwide enforcement operation to remove alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET bottles below 200ml from circulation, in line with the Federal Government’s ban on the production, importation, distribution, sale, and use of the products.
According to the agency, the enforcement exercise is being carried out across the six geopolitical zones following the closure of manufacturing facilities found to be non-compliant with the directive.
NAFDAC said the operation forms part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard public health and ensure compliance with existing regulations.
NAFDAC stated that enforcement teams have been deployed to markets, motor parks, retail outlets, bars, and other distribution channels to identify, seize, and remove the banned alcoholic products from circulation.
The agency warned manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, transporters, and other stakeholders to immediately surrender any remaining stock of the prohibited products. It stressed that continued possession or sale of the banned items constitutes a violation of the law and may result in product seizure, regulatory sanctions, and prosecution.
NAFDAC explained that the nationwide crackdown is aimed at reducing underage drinking, harmful alcohol consumption, and substance abuse, particularly among children and young people.
The agency also urged members of the public to support the enforcement exercise by avoiding the purchase of banned alcoholic products and reporting anyone involved in their production, distribution, or sale to the nearest NAFDAC office or through its toll-free line, 0800-1-623322.
