The Qatari government has outlined the key conditions foreigners must satisfy to be considered for citizenship, with one of the major requirements being at least 25 years of continuous legal residence in the country.
According to information published on the Qatari government’s official website, applicants must also demonstrate financial independence, possess a clean criminal record, and be able to read and write in Arabic.
However, meeting all the eligibility criteria does not automatically guarantee citizenship, as the final decision remains at the discretion of the Qatari authorities.
The announcement is expected to draw significant attention across Africa, where thousands of citizens from countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Ethiopia, Uganda, Sudan, and Egypt live and work in Qatar.
Foreign workers make up the majority of Qatar’s labour force and contribute to key sectors including aviation, construction, hospitality, healthcare, domestic services, and other professional fields.
Despite the clearly defined requirements, the Qatari government emphasised that citizenship applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis, with approval subject to government discretion.
