US President Donald Trump has threatened to rename Canada’s Lake Ontario as “Lake America” amid escalating trade tensions between the United States and Canada.
Trump made the suggestion in a video shared on his TikTok profile, in which he crossed out “Lake Ontario” on a map and replaced it with “Lake America”.
He had previously said the proposed renaming was under “serious consideration”.
The development comes as tensions between Washington and Ottawa remain high following a fresh round of trade tariffs.
Canada has announced tariffs on about $20bn worth of US imports in retaliation for new duties imposed by the Trump administration.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would respond “dollar for dollar” to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses after trade negotiations between the two countries broke down over the weekend.
Lake Ontario would be the latest geographical landmark targeted for renaming during Mr Trump’s second term.
The president has already signed orders changing the names of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” and Alaska’s Denali to “Mount McKinley”.
Trump has also moved to put his name and likeness on several US cultural institutions, including the Kennedy Center and the US Institute of Peace.
