Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly considered relocating his primary residence from California to Florida amid concerns over a proposed billionaire wealth tax.

The development has reignited debate over whether higher taxes on wealthy individuals could encourage business leaders and affluent residents to move to states with more favourable tax policies.

Reports indicate that Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, purchased a mansion on Indian Creek Island near Miami, Florida, in early 2026. However, the property purchase does not necessarily confirm that the couple has permanently relocated.

The reported consideration comes amid a proposed California ballot measure that would impose a one-time five per cent tax on the wealth of qualifying billionaires.

According to reports, Zuckerberg has discussed the possibility of moving his primary residence out of California to avoid a potentially substantial tax liability.

However, a development reported by Reuters on October 21, 2026, indicates that Meta has reached an arrangement intended to keep Zuckerberg in California for eight years.

The arrangement reportedly involves non-voting shares that could be sold to cover a potential tax bill while allowing him to retain voting control of the company.

Although Zuckerberg’s reported consideration of a move has drawn attention to the potential impact of wealth taxation, his permanent departure from California has not been confirmed.

The controversy has also fuelled wider discussions about whether aggressive taxation of wealthy residents could prompt an exodus of high-net-worth individuals and entrepreneurs.
