US President Donald Trump’s portrait has appeared on a new US $1 coin, in the latest move highlighting his influence over American institutions.

The US Mint launched the commemorative coin featuring Trump’s portrait alongside the inscriptions “Liberty” and “In God We Trust” as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The Mint said the coins would not be released into general circulation, although they could be used as legal tender.

US federal law generally prohibits the image of a living president from appearing on US currency. However, legislation authorising commemorative coins for the 250th anniversary included a design provision that allowed Trump’s portrait to be used.

The coins were offered for $61 for a roll of 25 and $154.50 for a bag of 100.

Within hours of going on sale, the coins were listed as “not currently in stock” on the US Mint’s website.

They were also made available through vending machines at the US Mint store in Washington DC.
